Tiger Loose After Hurricane Ike Blows Through SE

Hurricane Ike: Tiger on the loose near Galveston

Galveston County Judge James Yarbrough says a tiger has been on the loose since Hurricane Ike tore through the coastal community of Crystal Beach, Texas.

"It's an issue we are dealing with," he tells reporters. "When you think you've seen everything you find something else."

Yarbrough wouldn't describe the tiger as tame, but he says the animal is well-known to the local community.

Update at 2:06 p.m. ET: The Associated Press says the animal escaped from a sanctuary for exotic pets.

"I understand he's hungry ... so we're staying away from him," Yarbrough says.

GALVESTON, Texas — A tiger's on the loose in Galveston County.

Galveston County Judge Jim Yarbrough said Tuesday that the animal is out of its enclosure at an exotic pets center. The news follows reports of a lion holed up in a Baptist church with its owner on Bolivar Peninsula as well as livestock and other animals roaming amid Hurricane Ike's wreckage.

Yarbrough said, "Turns out there's a tiger, and I understand he's hungry ... so we're staying away from him."

Yarbrough said everyone in the neighborhood knows the big cat, and thatexperts were being brought in to rescue it and other animals.
